Hello, my name is Cole MacCulloch. I recently had the honor of receiving the Ultimate Student award for 2009. I have been practicing karate for over nine years, and have always valued and admired this award.
When I first started karate with my best buddy Kyle, Joey Watson was the SWAT team member for our class. Kyle and I looked up to him and wanted to be like him in every way, shape and form. Joey inspired us to be just as committed as he was in everything and to never give up. Joey received this award as well as David Lloyd. I have always admired and have tremendous respect for both Joey and David.
If I could give one word of advice it would be, have confidence in your technique, and give one-hundred percent effort. Karate has given me confidence that I would have never possessed, and I am very thankful for the influence that karate has on my life. |

Stand Up and Shake Hands! There are certain times when good manners dictate that you should stand up and shake hands, particularly during introductions, interviews, and parties. If you learn the following rules others will notice your excellent manners and you will make a great first impression! Remember to make eye contact and speak clearly!
Basic rules for the handshake:
- Use your right hand and make your handshake true and warm.
- Men should stand and shake hands with each other when introduced.
- A man does not shake a woman's hand unless she extends it. When shaking a woman's hand be sure that the grip is not crushing or too hard.
- A woman doesn't need to stand when shaking hands unless the person with whom she is shaking is much older or famous.
- If you are introduced to someone whose arm is in a cast or missing, you still may extend your hand and let the person shake it with their left hand.

Congratulations to all our participants for an extremely successful Break-A-Thon. The Break-A-Thon supported the 3rd Annual Max and Jake’s Big Race. We raised over $1,800.00!!
The event was for the Rady Children’s Hospital Heart Institute. This year’s proceeds will go toward the development of a new MRI center strictly for pediatric use.
Everyone participating broke at least one board, including Jake’s own Mom! The dojo was filled with much energy, high spirits and many wood splinters.

"Competing at The Golden Gate Internationals was a great experience for me in many ways. First of all, it was so inspiring to see so many excellent martial artists, from super sharp 5-6 year olds, to adults who were still competing in the 40+ age group. I met some other wonderful adults who got involved with martial arts because of having children in the sport, just like me. But the best part of the experience was having the opportunity to face my own anxiety about competing and learning to do my best under pressure. I gained a lot of confidence through this experience and am looking forward to competing again in the future."
From Sensei Jackson……"Congratulations to Mrs. Rachel Herman who competed in the Golden Gate International Karate Tournament in San Francisco over the weekend of February 21. Because of her hard work and attention to detail, she did a fantastic job, winning a national underbelt title. She succeeded by making it though the first round with a 1st place win in traditional forms. From there Mrs. Herman competed against all the other first place winners in the grand championships, where she won there as well! Congratulations again for representing the dojo well and bringing home a national title!" Congratulations from all the staff and students at USAFMA – we are proud of you! |
